PGA Golf Catalunya is ideal Ryder Cup venue

Frenchman Thomas Levet, who claimed his fifth European Tour victory in the Spanish Open at PGA Golf Catalunya on May 3, has hailed the venue as his ‘favourite course in Spain.’ The 40-year-old former Ryder Cup player, who shot 18-under-par to win the Spanish Open, also claimed PGA Golf Catalunya would be ‘ideal’ for its original use – to host the Ryder Cup.

The venue, which welcomed 40,000 spectators over Spanish Open week, was originally purpose built by the European Tour to host the 1997 Ryder Cup, but its delayed construction resulted in the matches being relocated.
Levet said: “I love PGA Golf de Catalunya, it is my favourite course in Spain. It would be an ideal Ryder Cup venue.”

Hansen Impressed

PGA Golf Catalunya’s Stadium Course was recently named the no.3 course in Europe by Golf Monthly, and it impressed a second Ryder Cup star, Soren Hansen, who broke the course record with a first round of 63, which incredibly included a double bogey. But nine birdies and an eagle saw him etch his name into the record books.
Hansen said: “It was a great honour to beat the record at a place like PGA Golf Catalunya. I was really impressed with the course, it is a great test of golf, a course where if you don’t get it right you can do badly.

Outstanding conditions

“All credit to the Spanish Open and to PGA Golf Catalunya for a great course. We always talk about the wonderful conditions of golf courses in America, but now we play in the same great conditions in Europe and PGA Golf Catalunya is a great example.”
Agustin Garcia, Director of Golf at PGA Golf Catalunya, said: “The course was in outstanding condition, and this was reflected in the comments made by a number of players taking part in the Spanish Open. The hard work and investment made by the proprietors has paid off and we have a golf course we can be extremely proud of.”

Investents

The 36-hole resort, which also boasts a luxury hotel, has undergone significant investment over the past two years, making it one of the finest golf venues in Europe and host to the 2008 and 2009 European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage.
Barcelona Girona Airport, serviced by Ryanair, is just five minutes from the resort, with Barcelona International Airport (55 minutes) also providing easy access from across Europe.
